Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM):

Intraoperative neuromonitoring are tests used during surgery to monitor the integrity of of your nerves, spine, and brain, during surgery. All intraoperative nervous system monitoring should always be recorded by a qualified HPCSA registered Clinical Neurophysiologists.

It is important that you know whether the person performing monitoring during your surgery is registered with the HPCSA.

IONM is the ONLY method of ensuring maintenance of continued patency of the nervous system during any surgical procedure that approaches the location of peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, plexuses, as well as cranial and intracranial surgery

IONM is the only method of determining imminent nerve injury during surgery and before permanent procedural damage is done

IONM is the only method of functional testing during compressed nerve release surgery

IONM is the only guidance surgeons have in predicting imminent nervous system injury and preventing or minimising post-surgical neurological deficits.
