There are two levels of entry to the practice of clinical neurophysiology in South Africa.
The first is becoming a Clinical Neurophysiologist through completion of a four year focused degree, or alternatively pursuing a career as a registered Electroencephalographic (EEG) Technician.
Clinical Neurophysiologist are independent practice healthcare professionals working directly with patients and diverse medical specialists such as Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Pulmonologists and other internal medicine specialties to investigate patients' symptoms and diagnose diseases relating to the brain, nervous system, and muscular system.
Electroencephalographic Technicians form a key pillar of neurological patient care and work under direction of a Clinical
Neurophysiologist and are practitioners trained in EEG the recording of electroencephalograms and in some
instances limited sleep study tests.
